Obtaining State of California Identification

A Client how does not have ID should be advised to call/go to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and  request an appointment.

  • The DMV is located nearby at 111 W. Alma, about 1 mile away. Go South on Vine St., then turn left on Alma, and the DMV is a couple of blocks down on the left.

The client does not have to apply for a Driver's License.  The DMV will issue an ID for someone who simply needs some form of identification but does not intend to operate a motor vehicle.

Homeless Clients:
For homeless clients, the usual issue is the lack of a street address to use for an ID.  Homeless clients can do one of the following:

  • If they are currently receiving mail through some agency, they can use the address of that agency

  • If they are currently receiving mail through a friend or relative that is in one of the zip codes that SMUM serves, they can use that address

  • For a small monthly fee, the client can rent a mailbox at a place like Mailboxes, Etc.

Policy for assisting Clients to acquire their California State Identification card:
On occasion (based upon sources of funding) we are able to provide a check for $6.00 made out to the Department of Motor Vehicles for Clients (i.e., homeless clients) that do not presently have their State Identification card.  The procedure is as follows:

1.  The Client is not able to present a current Photo Identification card. (We DO accept Photo ID cards from other nations (i.e., Mexico, Puerto Rico, etc.))

2.  The Client claims that they can not afford a California State ID card.

3. The Client must call/go to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and  request an appointment (address above).

4.  The Client must return with the appointment slip (a stamped and dated appointment notice) from the DMV

  • Ask the client to come in when the Executive Director is in the office, Monday - Thursday 9-12, or Saturday 9-12

5. The Executive Director may write a check ($6.00) to the DMV for an ID card.

6. The Client must return with the temporary ID from the DMV

7.      Make a note that the Client has received the temporary ID in the comments section of the Client’s record.

For any questions, please contact the director.
