New SMUM Leaders Visit Studio

Studio After-School Homework, Computer Program

Grade school kids in inner city San Jose are welcome to come to Studio, a free after-school homework and computer program: 4-6 pm Tuesdays and Thursdays at SMUM. Parents: please register your kids at the SMUM office.

Executive Director
Santa Maria Urban Ministry

Santa Maria Urban Ministry, the principal outreach ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of El Camino Real, serves inner city poor and disadvantaged in San Jose, California. SMUM provides basic services to meet short-term needs, such as food, clothing and referral services to other agencies.  SMUM, is affiliated with the Second Harvest Food Bank, distributes food to residents of downtown San Jose, and provides emergency food to homeless individuals.  It supports long-term transformation through education, counseling, tax filing assistance and other programs to address seasonal needs.

SMUM seeks to promote self-sufficiency among its clients and provides various services six days a week.  Most of the families served have at least one adult member with a full-time job. Yet, for many, they are working at minimum wage.  More than 60% of those served are children. A majority of those served are Latino.

The Executive Director will champion SMUM, ensure the effectiveness of its programs, be an advocate for the people the agency serves, and fundraise to enable SMUM to maintain and increase its value to the community it serves.  The Executive Director will provide oversight and management of SMUM’s programs, services, volunteers and paid staff.

Compensation: $65,000 annually, plus benefits.

Qualifications:

  • Experience serving low-income, multi-cultural, communities
  • Management experience, preferably social services program management
  • Volunteer development and management experience
  • Bilingual English and Spanish
  • Bi-cultural – preferable
  • Proven track record in fundraising
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • BA degree, or equivalent work experience
